2008 Otoe County 4-H Public Speaking Contest

Monday, March 24, 6:30 p.m. Kimmel Event Center in Syracuse

PURPOSE: Encourage youth to develop communication skills through public speaking.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:

  • Youth do not have to be enrolled in 4-H to compete.
  • Youth may participate in both a Speech and a PSA Division.
  • If you are using a poem or story in Novice Division, credit the author in a beginning statement. A simple statement like, “I am presenting a piece from Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White,” will work. It will not count in the timing of the speech.
  • Visual aids are not allowed. There is a communications contest in the summer where visual aids are permitted.
  • Each county may send three individuals to the district contest in each of the following age divisions: Junior Speech, Junior PSA, Intermediate Speech, Intermediate PSA, Senior Speech, and Senior PSA.

Clover Kids - 6 and 7 years. No time guidelines. Must recite the 4-H Pledge (alone or with other Clover Kids or recite the Pledge of Allegiance (alone or with other Clover Kids). Awards - Ribbons and $1 coins

Novice Speech - 8-11 years. Time - under 3 minutes. Can be in this division only ONE year. Can read or recite a poem or story. Awards - Ribbons & $1 coins. Champion - $10.00 Res. Champ - $5.00

Junior Speech - 8-11 years. Time - under 3 minutes. Must be an original speech relating to 4-H. Awards - Ribbons & $1 coins. Champion - $10.00 Res. Champ - $5.00

Intermediate Speech - 12 and 13 years. Time - 3 to 5 minutes. Must be an original speech relating to 4-H. Awards - Ribbons & $1 coins. Champion - $10.00 Res. Champ - $5.00

Senior Speech - 14-18 years. Time - 5 to 8 minutes. Must be an original speech relating to 4-H. Awards - Ribbons & $1 coins. Champion - $10.00 Res. Champ - $5.00

Radio PSA

Junior - 8-11 years. Time - 60 seconds. PSA MUST promote 4-H. PSA MUST be submitted on cassette tape or CD. May use sound effects. Awards - Ribbons & $1 coins. Champion - $10.00 Res. Champ - $5.00

Intermediate - 12 and 13 years. Time - 60 seconds. PSA MUST promote 4-H. PSA MUST be submitted on cassette tape or CD. May use sound effects. Awards -Ribbons & $1 coins. Champion - $10.00 Res. Champ - $5.00

Senior -14-18 years. Time - 60 seconds. PSA MUST promote 4-H. PSA MUST be submitted on cassette tape or CD. May use sound effects. Awards - Ribbons & $1 coins. Champion - $10.00 Res. Champ - $5.00
