Tips On Tap

ALUMINUM TABS

We just delivered 123,000 tabs to the Ronald McDonald House in Omaha. Otoe County 4-H is enrolled in their Thanks a Million Club. Once we turn in a million tabs, we will receive a plaque and our name will be on a plaque at the Ronald McDonald House in Omaha. So far we have turned in 447,000 tabs! Keep saving your tabs! We take all kinds of tabs: pop, pudding, cat, dog, etc. You can drop them off at the Extension Office anytime for the next delivery.

ZIGGADEE DAY

Ziggadee Day is Wednesday, May 28, 9 a.m. - 12 noon at the Kimmel Event Center in Syracuse. This year the Communications Contest, Fashion Show, Favorite Foods Revue, Poultry Showmanship, Rockets, and the Life Challenge Contest will be highlighted.

The 4-H’ers will create a sand art planter after their learning sessions.

A $5 fee will cover the cost of the craft and snack. Call the Extension Office at 269-2301 to pre-register. Check out your May 5th Tips for more information.

CONTEST DAY - June 7

On Saturday, June 7, 4-H’ers can take part in two contests. The Senior Division 4-H Life Challenge will begin at 8:30 a.m. The Meats for Consumers Judging Contest is at 10:15 a.m. Both contests will be in the Fair Center on the Otoe County Fairgrounds in Syracuse. Quality Assurance will follow at 11:15 a.m.

4-H CLUB OF EXCELLENCE

The Nebraska State 4-H Office is recognizing 4-H Clubs of Excellence, formerly called Charter Clubs. To receive the designation as a 4-H Club of Excellence in Nebraska, 4-H clubs must meet the following:

  • Have at least five members from at least two different families
  • Recite the 4-H Pledge at meetings
  • Meet at least six times per year
  • Choose/elect youth officers
  • Give youth leadership roles
  • Have one club project (related to curriculum) which the club can do together
  • Have adult role models (parental involvement)
  • Are facilitated by a volunteer/organizational leader who has successfully completed the Volunteer Profile
  • Have members who perform a presentation or public speaking at the club level or above
  • Complete one community service project
  • Have members who participate in a county, district or state event(s)
  • Celebrate member and club achievements

If a club meets all these requirements they will get a charter and a seal the first year and an additional seal in subsequent years. These will be presented at the 4-H Achievement in the fall.

4-H PERFORMING ARTS CONTEST

Plan now to join in the fun of the 4-H Performing Arts Contest on Wednesday, August 13, 6:30 p.m. on the Kimmel Event Center stage, with the Fashion Show.

The rules for the Performing Arts Contest are included on the flyer in this Tips on Tap.

Registration deadline is August 1. If you need more information, contact the Extension Office. A thank you to Ginny Bartels for providing a Superior Performance plaque.

All Livestock identification papers are due in the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 2. Also, all Quality Assurance Certification must be completed by June 15.

QUALITY ASSURANCE TRAINING

  1. A. Training will be Saturday, June 7, 11:15 a.m. at the Fair Center on the Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The training will last approximately one hour. See you there!

FAVORITE FOODS REVUE

The Favorite Foods Revue combines food preparation, menu planning, and table setting skills. 4-H’ers participating in the Favorite Foods Revue need to plan a menu suitable for an indoor or outdoor meal. One food the 4-H’er prepared should be brought along to the Revue with the selected table service, centerpiece, menu card, recipe card, and card table. 4-H’ers enrolled in all 4-H Foods projects are eligible to participate.

The Favorite Foods Revue will be Thursday, July 17, 9 a.m. at the Kimmel Event Center in Syracuse. Pre-registration is due by July 15. Pre-register by calling the Extension Office at 269-2301 or by filling out the pre-registration form available at the Extension Office.

This contest for boys and girls is divided into three age divisions: Clover Kids; Juniors - those 11 and under as of January 1, 2008; and Seniors - 4-H’ers 12 and up. More information on the contest is found on the enclosed flyer.

Please note the Junior Division 4-H Life Challenge Contest and the Favorite Foods Revue will run simultaneously, so everyone can participate in both contests!

AK-SAR-BEN BROILERS

Anyone wanting to exhibit broilers at Ak-Sar-Ben this year needs to register at the Extension Office. This needs to be done by June 25. The birds cost $55.00 for 50 plus a $10.00 entry fee.

JUNIOR DIVISION LIFE CHALLENGE CONTEST

The Junior Division 4-H Life Challenge Contest will be Thursday, July 17 at the Kimmel Event Center in Syracuse. Registration begins at 9 a.m., with the ribbons and awards presentation scheduled for approximately 11:30 a.m.

This contest is for boys and girls 11 and under as of January 1, 2008. Youth will judge four placing classes and take a short quiz.

More information on the contest is found on the enclosed yellow flyer.

Judging kits are available for check out from the Extension office. Please note the Favorite Foods Revue and the Junior Division Life Challenge Contest will run simultaneously, so everyone can participate in both contests!

Junior Division 4-H Life Challenge

LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST

This year’s Otoe County 4-H Livestock Judging Contest will be Sunday, June 1 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kimmel Arena. This is an Otoe County Fair event so ribbons and awards are given to those 4-H’ers and clubs that participate. For those 4-H’ers that want to go on and judge at PASE, this will be good practice.

BABYSITTING CLINIC

So you want to be a babysitter? It’s a great idea for girls and boys. Babysitting is a job – it calls for lots of responsibility, offers a chance to make money and can be lots of fun.

You can learn about child care and safety to help you become a super sitter at the Babysitting Clinic, June 10 and 11,9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Kimmel Event Center in Syracuse. There is a $5.00 fee for workshop materials.

The clinic will include infant care, the development of the preschool child, creative play, emergency first-aid and safety procedures.

For more information and to enroll, call the Extension Office at 269-2301. Youth do not have to be enrolled in 4-H to participate.

AK-SAR-BEN BREEDING GILT SHOW

This year Ak-Sar-Ben will have a breeding gilt show on Thursday, September 25. There are special registration forms for them and the rules are available at the Extension Office or on the Ak-Sar-Ben website. They are due back in the Extension Office by June 2.

4-H COMMUNICATIONS CONTEST

It’s time to start thinking about your topic for the 4-H Communications Event. Youth gain valuable communication skills by participating in the 4-H Communications Event. There are cash awards for the top four 4-H’ers in the Junior and Senior Division, plus plaques for the top 4-H’er in the Junior and Senior Division.

Check out the Otoe County Fair Book for ALL THE DETAILS, but brief rules are as follows:

  1. Individuals or teams (2 or 3 4-H members) may compete.
  2. A 4-H member need not be enrolled in the project area in which they are making a presentation.
  3. Classes include: a) using LCD, slide, video or overhead projector; b) using posters and c) using power point.
  4. Presentations using LCD, slide, video, overhead projects or posters will be penalized if they exceed the time limit of 10 minutes for individuals and 15 minutes for teams. Power point presentations need to be 6 - 10 minutes in length.

The 4-H Communications Contest will be Thursday, July 24 at the Kimmel Event Center beginning at 9 a.m. Pre-registration is due July 17. Pre-register by calling the Extension Office at 269-2301 or by filling out the pre-registration form available from the Extension Office.

CLOVER KIDS DAY CAMP

Clover Kids - be watching for a special invitation coming in the mail for your Clover Kids Day Camp, Thursday, July 3, 9 a.m. - 12 noon at the Kimmel Event Center in Syracuse. Project areas to be highlighted include: making a U.S. flag poster, a seed medallion, a table setting poster, plus designing a T-shirt. A $5 registration fee will cover program materials and snacks. Pre-register by Tuesday, July 1 by calling the Extension Office at 269-2301.

HOGS, SHEEP, MEAT GOATS & FEEDER CALVES

All of these species of livestock must have DNA samples taken if they are going to show at State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben. Market Sheep samples were taken at weigh-in on the 17th and the others will be done by the exhibitor.

Hogs, sheep and meat goats are $6.00/head and feeder calves are $5.00/head. Instructions, the envelopes, and forms needed are available at the Extension Office. This must be done by June 2. Contact Steve if you have any questions.

PASE

PASE this year will be June 30-July1 at UNL. On Monday, June 30 these events will take place: Meats Judging, Poultry Judging, Quiz Bowl Matches, Livestock Skillathon and Dairy Judging. On Tuesday, July 1 will be the Livestock Judging Contests starting at 7:45 pm. There are two divisions in Livestock Judging, Intermediate 12 or 13 as of January 1 and Senior 14 years of age as of January 1. Each team can have 3 or 4 individuals. If you would like to be put on the team representing Otoe County, please contact the Extension Office by June 6th.

PASE Quiz Bowl Divisions are the same as in livestock judging. If you would like to represent Otoe County in a Quiz Bowl Team, please contact the Extension Office by June 6th.
