The Otoe County Fair Book is updated and printed each year so 4-H members know what they may exhibit at the county fair. It also contains rules for county fair exhibitors as well as rules for project exhibits. It is extremely important for you to read your Otoe County Fair Book!

CHARACTER COUNTS! THROUGHOUT 4-H

Ribbons and trophies are a small part of 4-H competitions and events. Character development is the cornerstone and parents are powerful influences on the behavior their children exhibit.

At 4-H events, members are expected to follow a code of conduct based on the six Pillars of Character: respect, responsibility, caring, fairness, citizenship and trustworthiness.

When parents practice the Six Pillars, especially during the heat of competition, kids are more likely to embrace those values.

Parents should strive to do the following at 4-H events:

  • Treat members, parents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension staff, judges and others with respect, courtesy and consideration. Avoid and prevent insults, name calling, yelling and other verbal and non-verbal conduct likely to offend, hurt or set a bad example.
  • Model the importance of obeying the laws and rules as an obligation of citizenship, responsibility, fairness and trustworthiness.
  • Model kindness and compassion. Recognize that everyone has unique skills and talents that can be used to help others and the community.
  • Teach fairness by being open to others’ ideas, suggestions and opinions. Make an effort to assure equal access to participation for youth and adults regardless of race, creed, color, sex, national origin or disability. Treat all members impartially.
  • Provide a safe environment, not carelessly or intentionally harming youth or adults in any way - verbally, mentally or physically.

By following these guidelines, parents provide a positive 4-H experience for their children and others.

4-H FAIR BOOTHS

A $10.00 deposit is required by August 1 to reserve space for a 4-H booth. This $10.00 will be refunded after the fair if the booth was set up. Booth size is 4'x6'x6'. 4-H booths must be in place by 12:30 p.m. on the Saturday of the Fair.

LIVESTOCK ENTRIES

This year all COUNTY FAIR Livestock entries will be due on Friday, August 1. Entries for STATE FAIR will be due Friday, August 1, and AK-SAR-BEN are due Friday, August 15.

COUNTY FAIR BEDDING FEES

Again, this year the Fair Board will be collecting money for bedding at the time of entry. So when you enter your livestock on or before August 1 you will need to pay for your wood chips and/or shavings at that time. We will collect this money in the extension office. All Beef Cattle will be charged $5.00/head. Stocker Feeders are exempt. There will be no refunds for animals that do not come to the fair.

4-H COUNCIL VOTING

Serving as a member of the Otoe County 4-H Council is a very important and fulfilling job. Again this year we will be voting during the County Fair. Voting takes place at the Extension Office and at various 4-H entry locations. It is important that as many of you vote that is possible. Youth vote for youth and adults vote for adults.

Voting is not the only important duty, serving on the council during your involvement in 4-H is also important. If you would like to be on the ballot contact a 4-H Council Member or the Extension Office. Every club should have a candidate for their districts.

REMINDER: Please send in your forms regarding the times for your 4-H club to work the food stand at the Otoe County Fair. Thank you!

FOOD STAND

This year the Otoe County 4-H Food Stand will be open on Saturday, August 9. They will be open from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. for the people entering exhibits and those volunteers working.

The Otoe County Farm Bureau will provide a $1.00 coupon for every 4-H member during the 2008 Otoe County Fair. The coupons can be picked up by the 4-H members at the Extension Office during the fair. These coupons are good for $1.00 worth of food or drink at the Otoe County 4-H Council Food Stand. Please take time to thank the Otoe County Farm Bureau for the generous gift.

4-H EXHIBITOR NUMBERS!

Enclosed in this newsletter you will find the 4-H Exhibitor numbers on green colored paper. Please save these as these are your numbers to put on the exhibit cards you attach to your project or turn in the office for livestock.

STALLING SHEETS

Don’t forget that all clubs and independents need to fill out stalling sheets for animals coming to the fair. This needs to be done so each club gets the space they need. New this year - we have a separate stalling sheet for horses. This will help our superintendents know how many stalls each club needs.

FAIRGROUNDS PAINTING

Looking for a community service project? Come join the Better Ba-c’s in painting up the fairgrounds, on July 18, 2008. We plan to start around 6 pm and we will paint until dark. Our plans are to start at the horse arena fence, bleachers and depending on the number of volunteers we will venture to the hog wash area of the fairgrounds. Make sure you wear old clothes for this is an oil based paint and will not clean up with water. Paint and supplies will be provided, but in order to have enough supplies please let us know if you will be helping us. If we do get rained out the rain date will be July 25 same time, same place. For additional information, contact Gina or Brandon Essink at 402-269-2027.
